Libraries Rock!

Libraries Rock!  Summer Reading Program

It’s that time of year again!  We’re gearing up for our next summer reading program.  The theme is “Libraries Rock,” and Miss Margaret and Miss Michell have had lots of fun planning fun programs for this summer.  Miss Margaret has always incorporated music into her story times, but she’s kicking it up a few notches this year.  In library circles it is well known that she crafts her own musical instruments in a pinch, or just for fun…

There are lots of reasons to sign up for the Bondurant Community Library’s annual summer reading program.  Kiddos fight off the “summer slide” by maintaining their reading skills, and they are likely to improve those reading skills in preparation for the next school year. You get to read all kinds of awesome books, attend cool programs, and earn prizes.

How does it work?  Sign-up for the program begins May 21st, and all ages are welcome.  Pick up your reading log and get ready to set your reading goals.  Suggested reading requirements are:  adults four hours per week, middle, high school and elementary students three hours per week and pre-school two hours per week.  Turn in your reading logs weekly to earn cool prizes.  There’s no excuse to not participate!

The Bondurant High School and Middle School band members will be at this year’s Summer Reading Program kick-off event Monday, June 4.  It’s the perfect start to this year’s musical theme!  This summer’s programming includes The Hanson Family, Des Moines Symphony petting zoo, Science Center of Iowa, Polk County Conservation, Drum Safari, Absolute Science, Blank Park Zoo, karaoke, Duke Otherwise, Miss Carol, and magician Rick Eugene.

Pick up a calendar at BCL or check out our website at to see specific dates and times for all summer reading programs.  Events are always free and open to the public.

Book Sale

The Bondurant Summerfest is just around the corner, and that means our annual book sale will be underway too.  After you’ve had your fill of the Tilt-o-Whirl, funnel cakes and giant turkey legs, make/waddle your way to the library and stock up on books from our book sale.  Support your local library with your purchases!  Prices are fifty cents for hardbacks, twenty-five cents for paperbacks and DVD’s, ten cents for everything else.  There’s literally something for everyone and all ages at this sale.  This year, thanks to a large donation, there are a plethora of books on fishing, hunting, outdoor survival, camping, and all things outdoorsy.  (If a zombie apocalypse is imminent, we’ve got you covered.)  Lastly, if you find yourself with extra funnel cakes, we take donations…
