GENDER BALANCING

CITY OF BONDURANT GENDER BALANCING ON CITY COMMITTEES AUGUST 13, 2011

In 2009, the State adopted a law, now Section 69.16A(2) of the Iowa Code, which requires gender balancing on all City and County non-elected boards and committees effective January 1, 2012.  If the board or committee contains an even number of members, 50% must be male and 50% female.  If the membership is an odd number, there may be only 50% plus one of either gender.  This requirement does not apply to elected bodies such as the City Council. For the City of Bondurant, this requirement applies to the Planning & Zoning Commission, Board of Adjustments, Library Board, Park and Recreation Board, Tree Board and Stormwater Advisory Committee.  Committee appointments are made usually in December each year to be effective January 1.  The law allows appointments of either gender to be made if the City can show that it has made an effort for 90 days to find qualified members of the gender needed to balance committee membership.  Persons interested in applying for membership on any of the committees listed above should contact City Administrator Mark Arentsen at 515-967-2418, 515-971-6855 or marentsen@cityofbondurant.com.
